Musical auditions!

We are excited you are interested in trying out for the 2018 Glenbrook Musical! This year, we are doing Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” based off the classic Disney movie. We hope you are as excited as we are!
AUDITIONS:  The initial auditions will be held on Tuesday, February 27 at GBN and Wednesday, February 28 at GBS and will consist of a vocal audition and a dance call. Unless you indicate otherwise on your audition form, you will be considered for both lead/chorus. Audition materials are now available in the music department at both schools and online at www.gbnchoir.com and www.gbntheatre.com
DANCE CALL: Everyone must participate in a dance audition. A video of the dance combination will be available on Monday, February 27 at www.gbntheatre.com. You should practice the dance ahead of time to make yourself more comfortable at the dance audition. Dancers will review choreo at the audition and then perform in small groups.
FEMALE ROLES: Those wishing to audition for female lead roles or chorus will all sing the cut from “The World Above” (m. 27-43). They will also have the option to sing either the cut from “Part of Your World” (m. 70-88) OR “Poor Unfortunate Soul” (m. 109-130).
MALE ROLES: Those wishing to audition for male lead roles or chorus will sing the cut from “Fathoms Below” (m. 1-25). They will also have the option to sing either “Her Voice” (m. 85-117) OR “Finale Ultimo” (m. 73-84).
CALLBACKS All singing callbacks for leads will be held on Thursday, March 1. A chorus singing and dance callback will be held Friday, March 2. All callbacks will be at GBN.
● Female Chorus: “She’s in Love” (m. 25-48) - prepare your voice part
● Male Chorus: “ Fathoms Below” (m. 1-25)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • If I audition for the chorus, is it possible to be cast in a lead role? Sing what you’re comfortable with. If you sing for the chorus, we may decide to ask you to sing for a lead role at callbacks. Likewise, if you sing for a lead role, that doesn’t mean you won’t be considered for the chorus if you don’t get a callback for a lead role.
  • I consider myself to be an “actor who sings” rather than a “singer who acts,” and I’m concerned because I noticed that there isn’t an acting component to the audition. How can I show that I’m a great actor? There is very little dialogue in this show. The best way to show your acting skills for this show is to act through the songs. If you have the vocal chops required for the role, and show some character potential, you may have the opportunity to act at callbacks.
  • I’ve listened to the CD and all the music is so hard. I don’t think I can sing the lead roles. Should I still try out? Yes! There are many opportunities that require less vocal gymnastics than the lead roles. We need a variety of people in the show, including many dance roles, so try out! There aren’t that many lead roles in this show.
  • Will there be opportunities for features? There are vocal and dance features that may be listed on the cast list or selected once rehearsals begin.
  • I’m in not in the music or theatre programs at GBN/GBS, but I like the show and I want to be a part of it. Do I have a chance? Of course you do! Part of what is so great about this show is that it can feature a variety of vocal styles. Even if you’ve never received any formal vocal training, try out!
  • If I’m not on the callback list, does that mean I might still be cast? No. If you did not receive a callback, you are not being considered for the show.
  • How does the conflict sheet work? We ask that students fill out a conflict sheet stating up front what their expected conflicts are for the given rehearsal period. We then schedule our rehearsals around conflict and/or excuse students from rehearsals based on the conflict sheet agreement. During the last two weeks of the show, we ask that all performers work their other conflicts around the show. It takes everyone’s effort and participation to put on a great show!
  • I’ve heard that freshman never make it. Is that true? Experienced performers with more developed voices are more likely to be cast, but only one thing is certain: if you don’t try out, you won’t make it.
  • What if I’m an instrumentalist or technician. Will my skills be needed for this show? Mr. Kaplan is planning to include a full pit consisting of approximately forty instrumentalists. We suggest you listen to the music online to get a sense of the show. We also are looking for technicians who can create the world Under-the-Sea set and work with lights, sound, props, costumes, makeup, and hair.
  • Anything else I should know? Ms. Robinson is having a baby sometime this spring, so Mr. Maranto will be taking over responsibilities as we go along. We are so excited to work together and to work with an awesome company
